My latest CD features duets with 21 New Orleans musicians, including Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong (I won’t try and explain, you’ll just have to hear it).

John Boutte, Anders Osborne, Connie Jones….there are some great players here. Offbeat Magazine in New Orleans named it their Album of the Year for 2009.

38 originals here, including 24 pieces in all the major and minor keys; waltzes, rags, tangos, New Orleans R&B; I am very proud of this disc. The late George Brumat of Snug Harbor called it “the finest album of piano music ever recorded in New Orleans.” It’s been featured extensively on NPR as well as in the HBO series “Treme.”

Choro do Norte

My favorite. Choro is a Brazilian music form with many similarities to ragtime and trad jazz. In 2004, after many visits to Brazil I recorded three Joplin rags, pieces by Gottschalk and Morton, and my original choros with three amazing Brazilian musicians from the group Tira Poeira. I later added clarinetist Evan Christopher and trombonist Rick Trolsen. The result is a genuine fusion, a North American Choro that, I’m happy to say, is well-regarded by all the Brazilians I play it for (it got good reviews in the New York Times and Rolling Stone as well).

A duet album with Connie Jones, a superb cornetist. Connie has had a distinguished career with Jack Teagarden, Pete Fountain, and as a bandleader; I wanted to cast him in a different light here, and I loved the result. Liner notes by Tom Piazza.

This duet album with clarinetist Evan Christopher covers ground we mutually love: Jelly Roll, Gottschalk, Choro, Tango, New Orleans Trad Jazz and Musette. Evan has quite a healthy career, and this is my best-selling CD.
